Magia López


Magia López formed the hip-hop group Obsesión with Alexey Rodríguez in 1996, helping to kick-start Cuba’s rap movement. Obsesión’s music is widely acclaimed for its socially conscious lyrics, which often address race relations, and the group has shared the staged with renowned artists including The Roots and Mos Def. It has also participated extensively in international social collaborations. Magia works as a cultural educator organizing anti-racist trainings and gatherings for youth, artists, teachers, and the elderly. She is co-founder of the Club del Espendrú (The ‘Fro Club), a cultural organization that organizes various events including commemorative events for elder anti-racist leaders and the “Festival of the Black Doll.”
